DOMAINE DU JONCAS, 2011 JOIA
The twenty wine growers of Montpeyroux now hold their Open Cellars or Caves Ouvertes day annually on a Sunday in the middle of April. It’s a great opportunity to discover new estates and revisit old favourites. In the first category comes Domaine Joncas. Pascal Dalier has bought eight hectares of vines and made his first wine in 2011.
Cuvée Joia, which means joy in Occitan, is destined for early drinking. It is mainly Grenache with some Syrah, aged in vat and a concrete egg – that’s the latest cellar fashion these days – and the flavours are ripe and perfumed, with the liqueur cherry notes of Grenache and some rounded fruit on the palate. Pascal said that he wanted a gouleyant wine; I thought he had succeeded brilliantly.
